The Top Ten Greatest Breakup Songs of All Time
By Shana Wilson
This song is guaranteed to make you cry. Ed Sheeran incorporates strong acoustics and heavy lyrics into his song about taking drugs to make the pain disappear. I highly disapprove the use of drugs, so never use them, but the song will definitely make you think about life and pain.
9. Same mistakes by One Direction
7. Save You by Kelly Clarkson
5. Don’t Let Me Go by Harry Styles
Every One Direction girl should know this song, or they aren't a true fan. This song is a single written by Harry Styles and Sam Smith that was leaked over a year ago. It’s lyrics spin a tale of wanting to be held by someone, and never be let go forever. Harry Styles wrote a fantastic, heart-wrenching song about the sadness of losing someone and wanting to do anything for them.
4. Why I’m Single by Alli Simpson
2. Half a Heart by One Direction
And Number One Is…
1. My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion
Although One Direction is not a part of some peoples taste, same mistakes describes how relationships end sometimes because of a repeating cycle. With meaningful lyrics and pop influence, One Direction has made a perfect breakup song.
8.Back to You by Cody Simpson
Gorgeous Australian pop singer Cody Simpson is known for his songs of young teen love or puppy love. but he managed to surprise me with this beautiful break-up song. With a slow tempo and lyrics singing of trying to get a girl back, this song makes me well up every time.
Kelly Clarkson is known for her breakup and heartbreak songs, but this one is so powerful I had to include it in this list. Kelly Clarkson has such a powerful set of pipes, and she really shows them off in this song. Starting out slow, this breakup song will crush your heart and spirits.
This song is such a classic breakup song. Something about hearing a grown man cry a river of tears over a girl makes me feel sad every time I hear it. With his high- pitched voice and soulful lyrics, its guaranteed to make you feel even crappier about your breakup.

Alli Simpson is clearly following in big brother Cody’s footsteps when her first single was released. This upbeat song has fun acoustics and a good bass in the background. The beautiful and talented Alli Simpson sings about why she’s still single and how relationships can work in a never-ending circle. She clearly has the same knack for music her older brother has.
So, before Justin Bieber went off the deep end and decided to be a low-pants wearing, drug-using, disrespectful MORON, he was the sweet teeny-bopper from Canada we all knew and loved. This song, from his second hit album My World 2.0, starts out with a slow deep piano, but becomes more and more powerful the deeper you go. It tells of how anguished we all feel when we see the ex we haven’t gotten over yet with another girl. The whole song overall should make you cry for a good thirty minutes.
One Direction has made this list twice now, so clearly they must be good. Half a Heart is off their third album, Midnight Memories. It’s the last song on the album, and it made me sob the first time I heard. All of these guys have the most beautiful voices, let me just say that. The song is about how two people who have broken up are missing each other and how badly the boy wants the girl back. Words cannot give the song justice. Just go listen to it.
1. My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion
This song is like the mother of all breakup songs. If you haven’t seen the Titanic, you clearly have been too busy and need to clear your agenda for a life, because you haven’t lived until you’ve seen Titanic at least once. This song is in the credits, and Celine Dions voice is so powerful, it’s like having a fist shoved in your chest, taking your heart, and squeezing it really hard. She did this song so well, it is guaranteed to make you cry. The whole singing-about-two-lovers-from-different-social-classes-and-then-the-nice-boat-their-on-sinks-and-the-boy-drowns-for-the-girl really drenches your heart in sorrow. GO LOOK THIS SONG UP; ITS TOTALLY WORTH IT.
In-depth. Nice. I like posts that share lists of songs because it gives the reader a chance to explore a genre of music that they may not have been familiar with before. I have heard of only one song on that list and it's the Celine Dion song, which I had never listened to in it's entirety.
ReplyDeleteAlso, interesting choice of song choices, as I was expecting for a list of this nature, one relating to a recent break-up, to be empowering songs to help you get over the ordeal, but instead you by-passed that outlook and jumped right for the truth. Embrace that you will be upset and allow yourself time to grieve. It's a harsh truth that makes life more difficult, but you chose to go with it, and it was refreshing.
